June 9, 2016 – Ottawa – Anita Vandenbeld, Chair of the Special Committee on Pay Equity, tabled the Committee’s report “It’s Time To Act” in the House of Commons on Thursday morning. This substantive report calls for proactive pay equity legislation which is urgently needed.
“I am pleased to have chaired a committee which unanimously recognized the importance of this issue – working collaboratively and tirelessly over many late nights to draft this report.” said Anita Vandenbeld, Member of Parliament for Ottawa West-Nepean and the committee’s elected Chair. “‘It’s Time To Act’ builds on the 2004 Pay Equity Task Force report, incorporating new testimony and experience for a better, bolder set of recommendations. Our report makes it clear that pay equity must be recognized as a human right that cannot be bargained away.”
The Committee’s final report cites 31 recommendations which will have a real and tangible impact on Canadians and gender equality in Canada.
Some of the key recommendations in the report include:
- Repeal of the Public Sector Equitable Compensation Act (PSECA);
- Establishment of federal, proactive Pay Equity legislation that recognizes pay equity as a human right.
- Creation of a distinct Pay Equity Commission and Pay Equity Tribunal
- Adoption of a majority of the recommendations of the 2004 Federal Pay Equity Task Force report
“This report is concrete and uncompromising. Its recommendations call for urgent action that will make a real difference in making sure that the work of women will no longer be undervalued in the federal public service, federally regulated industries and among federal contractors. I am proud of the committee’s report and I look forward to seeing our recommendations implemented.” said Vandenbeld.
